Module 1 Working with Young People in Sport

The first module, Working with Young People in Sport, offers an introduction to understanding young people, the role of the coach and the impact they can have.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Identify areas of expertise and areas for development with their own practice.
2) Understand the role of a coach and the relationship between engaging young people and achieving programme outcomes.
3) Demonstrate understanding of factors that could influence young people’s behaviour.
4) Demonstrate appropriate behaviour management techniques.

Module 2 The Human Connection

This module aims to develop awareness of the importance of building relationships and the ‘human connection’ as part of effective coaching.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Understand the importance of building relationships within coaching.
2) Recognise potential to increase effectiveness as a coach by understanding participants.
3) Reflect on own motivations for coaching and those of participants.

Module 3 Benefits of Sport and Physical Activity

This practical module will utilise Kolb’s Learning cycle to explore the benefits of sport and physical activity in the widest sense. Participants will examine their own setting and programmes and plan an activity using one of the benefits of physical activity as the aim.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Identify benefits of sport and physical activity; physical, mental, social and personal.
2) Recognise programme planning and delivery should be aligned to programme aims.
3) Apply Kolb’s learning cycle Plan – Do – Review to participant programmes.

Module 4 Communication

A practical module building understanding around the use of communication in sport and its development as a transferable skill for young people.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Understand the importance of communication in sport and life.
2) Identify forms of communication, verbal and non-verbal, in sport and out with.

Module 5 Dynamic Youth Award in Sport Setting

A participatory half day training which will enable coaches to apply accredited DYA to recognise achievements of young people.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Understand the rationale behind the Dynamic Youth Awards.
2) Know how they complement existing practice.
3) Gain a working knowledge of the Dynamic Achievement Awards, enabling them to effectively promote, support and deliver the Awards within sport setting.

Module 6 Goal Setting

A module focused on building understanding around the process of setting goals in sport and how to develop as transferable skills for young people.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Understand the importance of goal setting in sport and life.
2) Identify opportunities for team and individual goal setting in sport and life.
3) Delivery practical sessions focused on goal setting in sport and the application in life.

Module 7 Conflict Resolution

This module will offer participants practical tools for dealing with conflict, aggression and challenging behaviour in a sports setting.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Identify personal triggers and reactions.
2) Understand what can cause conflict and how it can escalate.
3) Know how to communicate effectively in conflict situations.

Module 8 Standard Life - Step Up in Life

This is an 8 part module developed to be delivered directly to young people in bite size 15 minute chunks within a sports setting.

Learning Outcomes:

1) Know how to deliver each section of the employability resource to young people.
2) Understand how to support young people to produce a CV tailored to a specific job.
3) Identify key skills and competences employers are looking for in job descriptions and relate this to young people’s skills.
